The Five Eyes Alliance is a government spying network between the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, which allows the nations to share their intelligence. Through interviews with major players filmed across the ‘Five Eyes’ states, the documentary examines the rationale for universal surveillance and cyber security, against the implications this has for freedom and democracy.

Narrated by Lucy Lawless (Xena, Ash Vs Evil Dead), I Spy (With My 5 Eyes) features a diverse range of characters including the ex-director of the NSA and CIA General Michael Hayden, investigative journalist Nicky Hager, cyber security expert Brian Contos, NSA whistleblower William Binney and former Anonymous hacker Gregg Housh.

The online film is served up in five chapters: Behind the Eyes, Cyber Warfare & Espionage, The Chilling Effect, Searching for Terrorists, and Into The Future. Inside each chapter is a visually stunning film featuring additional ‘dig deeper’ content and opportunities for viewers to add their thoughts.

I Spy (With My 5 Eyes) was created and directed by International Emmy nominee Justin Pemberton (The Nuclear Comeback, Chasing Great) and produced by Carthew Neal of Fumes (producer of Sundance films Tickled – coming soon to HBO – and Hunt for the Wilderpeople – in wide release now). The interactive concept is created by leading digital production and design agency Jam3, winner of the Cannes Lion for interactive documentary Bear71.

“I wanted the documentary to form a conversation about how the age of surveillance is changing the way our world operates – and to consider where it might be heading”, says Justin Pemberton.

I Spy (With My 5 Eyes) is a New Zealand-Canadian co-production financed by NZ On Air and Canada Media Fund.
